World Rhino Day
Mother Rhino and Calf

The 22nd of September is World Rhino Day. This month at Deeper Africa we are focusing on Africa's big-five and the rhinoceros is the most endangered and rarest of the five. Just a few years back there were worries that the Rhino will soon be extinct, but now the news is better. Through the tireless efforts of conservationists worldwide, white rhino are thriving in Southern African and the once near extinct black rhino has rebounded in East Africa. That said, they are still not out of danger and continued efforts to conserve are crucial.
Most people think of the two white and black African rhinos but there are a few other rhino species surviving in the world. Just over 4,000 unicorn rhinos live in India and Nepal (rhinoceros unicornis). In Indonesia there remains a mere 50 Javan rhinos (rhinoceros sondiacus), 40 Sumatran rhinos (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), and two Borneo Rhinos (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis harrisoni.)
At Deeper Africa, our favorite rhino destinations are Mkomazi National Park in Tanzania, Laikipia Reserve in Kenya, and Sabi Sands Reserve in South Africa. You can read more about World Rhino Day here.
