In the harsh terrain of the Namib Desert, there are lions adapted to live on almost no water. A young naturalist, Dr. Flip Stander, was fascinated. For years he lived in the field, tracking lions and sleeping in his field lab, aka Land Cruiser. He started Desert Lion Conservation in 1998 to protect this endangered lion population and to protect people and livestock  from predation. Today his program tracks lion movement by satellite over 19,691 square miles, with results downloading to his vehicle. He works with Himba and Herero desert communities reporting on lion movements that might endanger humans, and advising villagers as they build on lion conservation to bring tourism into their communities.
