Sabyinyo Community Livelihood Association

SACOLA contributes to the conservation of gorillas in Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans while sharing proceeds from gorilla tourism with the local people.  Funds from the community owned Silverback Lodge are held in trust by SACOLA for conservation and community development. This unique revenue-sharing model sees the community directly benefiting from gorilla tourism and has been copied across many parts of Africa. Total revenue from the lodge is now over $3.3 Million and has directly benefited some 6,000 households in the Kinigi District of Rwanda. SACOLA has created quality housing for the area’s most marginalized people, including survivors of the Rwandan genocide and has donated cows to families with the greatest needs.
