What Uthando Funds
Uthando’s Community Development Funds support more than 50 projects across nine areas: education, food security, healthcare, arts and culture, shelter, skills development, sport, social services, and animal welfare. Uthando’s grant model backs the independent organizations that know their communities best. From early childhood development centers transformed from shanties into world-class facilities, to township micro-farms creating employment and food security, to the Biehl Education Center and the Farmers of Hope.
The Uthando Experience
Uthando offers philanthropic excursions that take travelers into Cape Town’s communities in a sensitive, authentic way, meeting program directors, hearing their stories, and experiencing the city beyond the wine farms and mountain views. These are genuine encounters with the people building a better city. As part of a responsible Cape Town community safari, an Uthando excursion is often the experience travelers remember most.
Pack for a Cause: What to Bring
Deeper Africa travelers can bring donations to give directly to project directors on arrival. Most needed items include art materials, school supplies, books, clothing, musical instruments, sports equipment, and non-perishable foods. Ask Deeper Africa for the list of donated items that Uthando is accepting. Bringing something is one of the most direct ways to extend the impact of your Cape Town community safari beyond the booking itself.
How Your Deeper Africa Safari Supports Uthando
Four Deeper Africa itineraries support Uthando’s work: Whales, Wine & Wildlife; South Africa: Wildlife and Community; South Africa: Wildlife & Conservation; and Wine & Wildlife. Each includes the opportunity to engage with Cape Town’s community programs through Uthando’s network. When you book a Deeper Africa South Africa safari, your journey funds the education centers, micro-farms, ballet programs, and community gardens that Uthando’s 50+ partner projects depend on.
